Do You Need a New Water Heater?

water heater options californiaYour propane water heater works hard behind the scenes, pumping out gallon after gallon of hot water for your taps and appliances.

But there will come a day when your water heater stops working – or worse, fails and causes thousands of dollars in water damage to your basement.

Warning Signs From Your Water Heater

The good news is that your water heater will usually give you some warning signs before it quits on you. Here are four clues to watch for – especially if your water heater is more than 10 years old.

  • Rising energy bills – If your monthly energy bills are getting higher even though fuel prices haven’t changed, your water heater could be to blame.
  • Leaks or rusty water – Leaks or rusty water coming from it are often signs that your water heater is corroding on the inside – a common problem with steel water tanks, especially if they aren’t properly maintained. If you see leaks at your tank – especially if you have an older water heater – contact us ASAP.
  • Odd noises – Odd sounds coming from your storage tank usually indicate a build-up of sediment – a problem that could eventually stop your water heater in its tracks if it isn’t addressed. Aim to flush your tank at least once or twice a year – here’s how. If you haven’t been doing this at least once per year, contact us today for water heater maintenance.
  • New signs of hard water – “Hard” water is water that contains a lot of minerals. Common signs of hard water include white stains on your silverware and glassware or itchy clothing. If those signs were always there, your municipal water supply is probably to blame. But If they appear suddenly when they weren’t there in the past, you could have lime build-up in your tank – a problem that may require you to replace your water heater.
