When it’s time for a replacement, Allied Propane can help

If you use propane for anything around your Northern California home or business, it is definitely within your best interest to keep your propane tank in good condition. Not only does a propane tank that is in good shape help the appliances, equipment, and machinery that it powers work more efficiently and effectively, but this is also a matter of safety. A worn-out tank can put you, your family, your home, and your employees at risk.

Seeing how important this issue is, let’s take some time to go over how you can tell if your propane tank is still in good working condition.

How to know it’s time to replace your propane tank

Luckily, there are certain signs that you can look out for that can indicate it may be time to replace your propane tank:

• Visible damage: If your tank is visibly deteriorating with rust, dents, or corrosion, it may have reached the end of its lifespan. Weather exposure can weaken the tank’s metal and potentially cause leaks.
• Your tank is old: Aboveground propane tanks typically last about 30 years, and underground tanks around 20 to 30 years. If your tank is within this age range, it may be time to upgrade.
• Inaccurate gauge readings: If your tank regularly shows incorrect fuel levels, it may be malfunctioning and require replacement.
• Fuel leaks: A propane leak smells like rotten eggs. If you detect this odor, contact your propane provider and emergency services immediately.
• Inefficient appliances: If your propane-powered appliances aren’t working as well as they used to, the tank may be the issue.

How to keep your propane tank in good shape

Even though propane tanks won’t last forever, there are ways that you can (and should) care for them. Proper maintenance and care are key to helping them last longer and helping your propane-powered appliances operate at peak performance.

A propane tank should be stored in a cool, dry and well-ventilated outdoor area. They should be kept in an upright position on a level surface that is out of direct sunlight and a safe distance away from anything potentially flammable.

Owners of propane tanks should also check for fuel leaks on a regular basis. When it comes to a grill tank, you can do this by spraying soapy water on the tank’s valve connections. If you see bubbles inside once you open the valve, chances are you have got a leak. With a larger propane tank, stay alert for anything that smells like rotten eggs.

And don’t forget to book regular maintenance appointments with a professional service!
