Is Propane Heavier Than Air?

Allied Propane Service Is Here to Tell You About — and Deliver — Your Propane

propane Dixon, CAThere is so much more to know about propane beyond the fact that it is versatile and can be used to power and fuel such a long list of appliances and pieces of equipment. Sure, knowing that it can be used for home heating purposes, warming water, heating a pool, fueling forklifts and powering clothes dryers is important, but understanding the properties of propane and how it behaves will help any homeowner or business owner who uses it stay safe.

So let’s dive into some important facts and information about propane.

What even is propane?

Propane is a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG for short). It is a byproduct of natural gas processing and petroleum refining. Typically it is in liquid form when stored and when in a propane tank on a property or worksite.

The vast majority of propane that is used here in the United States is also made here in the United States. Not only does this make it a very accessible fuel, but it also means that using it reduces our dependency on foreign oil.

Propane also never expires. It doesn’t even degenerate over time. This means that you can safely store as much as you like for as long as you like.

Propane’s density explained

Once propane is released from a tank it becomes a gas. In its gaseous state, propane is about 1.5 times heavier than air. Therefore, if fuel were to leak from your tank, it wouldn’t dissipate into the air the way natural gas does. Natural gas is able to do this since it is lighter than air, but propane doesn’t dissipate since it is heavier than air as we just established.

This means that leaked propane can easily settle and accumulate in basements, crawl spaces and on floors. If this leak was to come in direct contact with a flame or another source of combustion it could ignite and start a fire. This is part of why it is so important to be able to detect a propane leak.

How will I know if I have a propane leak?

Propane is both naturally colorless and odorless. However, an odorant is added to it during the production process to make it smell like rotten eggs. This makes it easy for propane customers to detect leaks.

If you think your propane tank is leaking, you should evacuate the area immediately and contact your fuel provider as well as emergency services as soon as you are far enough away from the site of the potential leak.

Does cold weather impact my propane?

Cold temperatures do not affect propane itself. However, cold temperatures do affect the pressure of your propane tank.

Cold weather causes propane’s volume to decrease and then contract. This impacts the internal pressure of a propane tank. When a tank’s pressure is too low you may get faulty readings from your tank’s gauge and your fuel may not be able to reach the burners of your gas-fired equipment so well.

You can help maintain the pressure of your tank by keeping it filled with fuel and keeping snow and ice off of it as best you can.
