Prepare your propane tank for winter

In anticipation of winter hitting the Northern California area, there are all sorts of things we have to do so that we can be adequately prepared. We’ve got to pull out our sweaters, jackets and gloves from storage. We’ve got to make sure our home heating systems are fueled and ready to go. And a homeowner who uses propane has to prepare his or her propane tank.

What you can do to prepare your propane tank for winter

Cold temperatures impact the pressure of a propane tank. As it becomes colder, propane’s volume decreases, which causes it to contract. This, in turn, affects the internal pressure of a propane tank. As the outside temperatures are dropping, a propane tank’s pressure is doing the same.

This can sometimes lead to a faulty reading from your propane tank’s gauge. Your gauge may end up telling you that you have less pressure in your tank than you actually do.

Additionally, your fuel may have trouble reaching the burners of your gas-fired equipment if tank pressure gets too low or if the weather remains really cold for a long period of time.

But there is good news. A homeowner can help with the pressure of his or her propane tank by preparing for the inevitable colder weather. This preparation includes:

• Keeping your propane tank full: Having an adequate supply of fuel in your propane tank helps with your tank’s pressure. Your fuel level should always be above the 30% point so that you avoid running out entirely.
• Install a programmable thermostat: Programmable thermostats give you the option of controlling the temperature of your home while you’re out and about. This means that you don’t have to keep your thermostat set at such a high temperature while you’re gone in order to return to a warm house – you can simply increase the temperature when you are on your way home. As a result, you’ll end up using less fuel and that helps homeowners save money.
• Stock up on the proper supplies: You don’t want to let snow or ice sit on your propane tank so make sure you have the supplies you need (such as a snow brush) to clear off your tank as quickly as possible. This also allows the sun to shine on your tank, which warms it up and decreases volume contraction.

While there are clearly some items to take care of in terms of a propane tank, this is not the case for propane itself. Cold temperatures don’t really affect the quality of a homeowner’s propane supply. Winter won’t make the fuel go bad – it won’t even cause it to deteriorate. There is no need to worry about it freezing either since the fuel’s freezing point is -306.4 degrees Fahrenheit.
