A whole house propane backup generator can be a literal lifesaver for your family, powering home medical equipment and keeping the heat on during the winter months (not to mention protecting your property and food) when severe weather strikes Northern California.

But the incredible peace of mind your generator buys you will only pay off if your generator works when you need it to. The good news is that it will – if you do your part to keep it operating as it should.

Generator Care Tips

Here are three things you can do to make sure your generator will answer the bell when you need it most.

1. Keep it filled – Make sure your generator has enough propane to get you through at least a week without power, since impassable roads and other emergencies may delay propane deliveries. Fall is a good time to schedule a propane delivery, before heating season is in full swing in Northern CA.
2. Test it – You wouldn’t leave your car in the driveway during the winter without running it occasionally, would you? Power up your backup generator about once every three months and watch for any problems. Increase the frequency during cold weather to about least once per month or more to lubricate moving parts and maintain important seals.
3. Have it maintained by professionals – An annual tune-up is a must for a propane generator; twice per year (pre-summer and pre-winter) is ideal. To find out more about maintenance for your propane backup generator, contact the propane experts at Allied today.
